Nature Spaces Buildings

All of these Nature Spaces buildings are privately owned, but open to the public during Gate Hours. Reservations are needed for specific areas.

The Picnic Shelter is first-come, first-served unless it is reserved. However, it has plenty of space for several groups. There are several garbage cans in the Picnic Shelter. 

Availability can be found on the Events page. Reservations can be made by contacting the office.

The Corn Crib offers a spectacular view across the prairie and provides a place to sit and relax in rocking chairs.

The Bird Room is located at the back of the Office building and will be open during Office hours.


The Outhouses are located near the Forge, across the parking lot from the Picnic Shelter. There is a garbage can and dog waste bags located with the Outhouses.

The Firepit is available only by reservation. We do not permit fires of any kind in the Nature Spaces, unless scheduled and supervised by Staff.

The Forge houses the Illinois Valley Blacksmith Association. Members demonstrate on the 3rd Saturday of every month and at special events. Blacksmithing classes are also available. Visit the IVBA website for more information.

The Observatories are home to the Twin City Astronomers Association. The TCAA offers frequent public observing sessions and conducts club activities throughout the year. Visit the TCAA website for more information.
